Indigenous Beginnings Before European contact, Point Loma was inhabited by the Kumeyaay people, who lived in the region for thousands of years, fishing the abundant waters and gathering resources from the coastal environment.
Spanish Exploration (1542) Point Loma was discovered by Europeans on September 28, 1542, when Portuguese navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo (João Rodrigues Cabrilho in Portuguese) departed from Mexico and led an expedition for the Spanish crown to explore the west coast of what is now the United States. Mexican Period (1821-1848) After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Point Loma became part of Mexican territory. The military history of Point Loma starts with the establishment of a Spanish fort in 1797 as a shore artillery station.
American Era (1848-Present) Following the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, Point Loma became part of the United States. The area’s strategic importance was quickly recognized, leading to significant military development. On September 28, 1850, Congress appropriated $90,000 for the construction of lighthouses at strategic points along the coast and near the entrance to important harbors. This led to the construction of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in 1855.
Military Significance Point Loma became increasingly important militarily, eventually housing major naval installations including what would become Naval Base Point Loma. The area played crucial roles during both World Wars and continues to be a significant military presence today.
Modern Development Rich in nature, people, and history, Point Loma is one of the oldest communities in San Diego. The peninsula developed into diverse neighborhoods, from the maritime communities near the harbor to residential areas taking advantage of the spectacular ocean and bay views. The former Naval Training Center was transformed into Liberty Station, now a thriving arts and cultural district.
Today, Point Loma balances its historical significance with modern residential and commercial development, remaining one of San Diego’s most desirable and historically important communities.
